BROOMFIELD, Colo. -
Despite winning their league title and earning the top spot in the Class 4A playoffs, the members of Broomfield High School's baseball team can't be blamed for asking "What if?"
The Eagles (21-3) rode a 21-game winning streak to the Northern League championship and a No. 1 seed in the state championship tournament. Then it slipped away.
Broomfield committed six errors in an 8-5 loss to eventual champion Cheyenne Mountain in the second round of the state championship tournament. An 11-10 loss to Silver Creek the next day ended the Eagles' season.
Still, the Eagles achieved coach Garren Estes' preseason goal of winning their conference outright.
Following a 4-3 loss to Skyline on March 13, Broomfield went almost two months without a loss.
Broomfield clinched its first title in Estes' eight-year tenure with a 4-1 road victory over conference powerhouse Mountain View.
Back-to-back homers by Cole Willard and Noah Coleman led the way over Mountain View, which entered the game tied for first in the conference.
Players dedicated the win to their coach.
"This is the first one for Coach, so we really wanted to win it for him," said Erik Lockwood, who pitched Broomfield to victory and knocked in two runs that day.
The league title was "topping on the cake" for a successful season, Estes said.
