Hospitals wipe out, limit medical bills for Colorado shooting victims

DENVER - Some of the victims fighting for their lives after being wounded in the movie theater shooting rampage may face another challenge when they get out of the hospital: enormous medical bills without the benefit of health insurance.

Members of the public, along with Warner Bros., the studio that released the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," have contributed nearly $2 million to help victims, though it's not clear how much of that will cover medical expenses. One family is raising money on its own online.

And three of the five hospitals that treated victims said Wednesday they will limit or completely wipe out medical bills.

Some of the victims, however, still face a long recovery ahead and the associated medical costs ? without health insurance. There's no exact count of how many of them don't have insurance but statistics suggest many of them might not be covered.

Nearly one in three Coloradans, or about 1.5 million, either have no health insurance or have coverage that is inadequate, according to a 2011 report by The Colorado Trust, a health care advocacy group.

The highest uninsured rate was among adults between 18 and 34 and many of those injured in the shootings are in that age group.

State officials said they are not sure whether any of the victims qualify for emergency Medicaid assistance available to needy patients. Victims could also get financial assistance from a state program that helps people hurt during crimes, including lost wages and counselling.

Among the uninsured victims of the movie theater attack is a 23-year-old aspiring comic, Caleb Medley, who is in critical condition with a head wound and whose wife, Katie, gave birth to their first child, Hugo, on Tuesday.

His family and friends said they have set a goal of raising $500,000 to cover his hospital bills and other expenses and were over halfway there on Wednesday.

"All the money that is donated is going straight to Caleb, Katie and Hugo to help them with medical bills, getting back on their feet, help with the baby items," friend Michael West said. "Anything and everything that they need."

Children's Hospital Colorado announced it would use donations and its charity care fund to cover the medical expenses of the uninsured. For those who do have insurance, the hospital says it will waive all co-pays.

"We are committed to supporting these families as they heal," according to a statement from the hospital, which treated six shooting victims.

HealthOne, which owns the Medical Center of Aurora and Swedish Medical Center, also says it will limit or eliminate charges based on the individual circumstances of the patients. Those hospitals have treated 22 shooting victims. However, the company cautioned its policy may not apply to all doctors working in its hospitals.

The other two hospitals, Denver Health Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital, where Medley is, wouldn't directly say whether they would assist shooting victims. However, they are the state's top two safety net hospitals and provided combined $750 million in free care in 2011.

Hospitals are required by federal law to stabilize patients during emergencies without regard to their ability to pay.

"The issue most probably facing the hospitals and patients in a situation like Aurora is what comes after 'stabilization,'" said Dr. Howard Brody, director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a frequent critic of excessive medical costs.

"Many of these people I assume will need prolonged and expensive rehabilitation after their immediate injuries are dealt with, and that seems precisely what hospitals today are less and less willing to cover out of their own funds, and no law requires that they do so, as far as I am aware," he said.

Medley is in a medically induced coma, but West said he has been showing signs of improvement, relying less on a ventilator to breathe. Medley's wife, 21-year-old Katie Medley, gave birth on Tuesday, one floor above his room at University of Colorado Hospital.

Standup comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who has appeared on Comedy Central, planned to headline a Denver fundraiser for Medley next week.

The fundraising might actually make Medley ineligible for some income-related assistance. His family and all other victims are already meeting with victim advocates, the case workers who deal with people hurt during crimes. The advocates determine what services they need and what assistance they qualify for.

"We have individuals who will need a lifetime of care, or a lifetime of accommodation, and our job is to make sure those needs are met," said Karla Maraccini, deputy director for community partnerships in the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper.

It was my best friend at school who got me into sailing -bizarrely, none of my family sail. My friends family invited me to go to Cowes Week with them, little did I know at the time that it is the largest sailing regatta in the world on the Isle of Wight. We were 15, and I had such a great time, the social life was brilliant! But aside from that, when I wasn?t being seasick, I absolutely loved being on the water and was determined that when I came back the following year I would be more than just deck fluff. I wanted to make a difference to the team.

Your career, both as an award-winning offshore sailor and a broadcaster, takes you to so many places around the world. Which is the best place you?ve ever travelled to for work?

I have been lucky enough to travel to every continent in the last 9 months alone. A couple of months ago I went to Itajai in Brazil, which was great and I would love to spend some more time in south America. But actually some of the most fun places have been closer to home. I was in Galway, Ireland for the end of the Volvo Ocean Race and despite the dreadful weather it was so much fun. One of the most wonderful and unusual places I have been are the Azores Islands in the middle of the Atlantic. They were amazing, the sea life is incredible as they are right in the gulf stream, I have never seen so many whales and dolphins!

Where would you recommend sailing enthusiasts to travel to?

There are some amazing places to see around the world from the water, but I have always loved sailing in Sweden, the archipelago outside of Stockholm has 32,000 islands just ready for you to anchor off, and have a BBQ. Although if you are going to sail there, make sure you have some very good charts ? lots and lots of rocks. Croatia as well provides some wonderful, cost effective sailing.

Best place you?ve travelled to during your leisure time?

Most of the travelling I have done has been work related, but I do try and make sure I get some downtime when I am away for long periods of time. I recently went to New Zealand for the first time ever, and you don?t get a better playground than here: sailing, cycling, skiing, fabulous scenery ? it seriously is one of the most amazing places in the world.

How about the worst holiday you?ve ever gone on ever?

I think I am lucky enough to say I have never been on a bad holiday. I am not sure if that says more about the amount of holidays I have been on, or that I am just very lucky! I did go away to Dublin a few years ago, and everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. From having to evacuate our apartment mid-shower due to a fire alarm, to missing our flight home. This was also at a time, when none of us could really afford to be in Dublin anyway! But it was all more of an adventure rather than a bad holiday.

You?ve recently pledged to get 100,000 members of the general public to take part in a health or fitness challenge, with your mission being to encourage, ambition, confidence, pride and well being, across the country. With the great August holiday just around the corner, do you have any tips on how we can stay healthy and fit during our travels?

We are so lucky in this country to have so much wonderful countryside and coastlines. And there is so much resource to find out where to go. My advice for the August Bank Holiday is scoop up the whole family, or your mates and head somewhere you have never been before, and go for a good old walk. Even if it is pouring with rain you can still have fun, and it will give you lots of stories to recount. If the weather is bad, reward yourself with a pub lunch, if the sun is shining take a picnic ? it?s so easy not to do it, but it?s so so much fun, and gives you such a sense of making the most of your days.

?Which is the best hotel you?ve ever stayed at in the course of your many travels?

Tough question, as so many of them are great for different reasons. The St Regis in Abu Dhabi was absolutely incredible ? I had my own butler, and the breakfast buffet was out of this world. The Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is just incredible with the most amazing roof top infinity pool. But to be honest, I am just as happy in a little house on the beach!

How about most memorable meal you?ve had while on the road?

I was in Sanya in China (nicknamed the ?Hawaii of China?) and our local collegues took us out for dinner on the beach. It was amazing, totally local, we picked the fish we wanted to eat from the tanks by the kitchen, sat on plastic chairs, with stray dogs roaming around ? but the food was amazing, the view was spectacular, and I think it cost about ?2 per person!

?Dream trip?

Antarctica. I have spent a lot of time at sea, and I am now desperate to see the stunning views that come with polar regions (even Greenland would do!). I love the space, the freedom, the lack of people and how wonderfully empowered you feel by the isolation.

Lastly, what does the future hold for you?

The future is super busy and exciting; I am continuing my sports broadcasting and will be presenting the Extreme Sailing Series in September which starts in Cardiff and then goes to Italy, France and Brazil which will be great. Beyond that my focus is going entirely into the new project and inspiring and helping more people to take up a personal challenge of their own. My target is 100,000 people in this country ? so I have definitely got my work cut out!!

Country singer Glen Campbell is canceling his upcoming tour with Kenny Rogers through Australia and New Zealand due to health reasons, the Associated Press reports.

A spokeswoman said Campbell ? who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease last year -- isn't up for "the very long flight that it would require."

Glen Campbell says goodbye in style at Grammys

Campbell has been on a Goodbye Tour, and the trip Down Under would have been his last international stop. The singer, however, is still scheduled for performances in the U.S. throughout the summer and into the fall.

Rogers will still make the tour through Australia and New Zealand, receiving help from Aussie country artists. The trek starts August 10 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

At the end of June, the "Rhinestone Cowboy" singer took the stage at the Hollywood Bowl for his last concert in his long-time home of Los Angeles, with tributes from artists including Jackson Browne and Kris Kristofferson. No emotional attachment to the other person is needed for them to have a good time. And for others there has to be an emotional connection in order for the sex to be good. Speaking for myself, I know that sex without emotion did absolutely nothing for me - yea I got worked up initially, but the true excitement wasn't there, and the finish, well there was none for me, and I would walk away from those experiences thinking what a waste of time. Only when I had an emotionally attachment to someone was I able to let go of my inhibitions and get lost in the moment. And the deeper the emotional connection, the stronger the sexual responses. Am I an oddity? How many other people out there are like that? For reference, my H had ALOT of sexual relationships before me, but he now claims that they were all of the physical nature and he never really understood there could be a deep emotionally aspect to it as well. BUT of course, he didn't walk away from these purely physical encounters as dissatisfied as I did with mine. In other words he was able to have sex for sex sake and enjoy it.

Sex releases certain chemicals in our brains that change the way we think ...the hormones released work to bond us to our partner, it's like gluing two pieces of paper together. If you tried to tear those pages apart, the break wouldn't be a clean one. The same kind of thing happens when there's a breakup in a sexual relationship. I've had one or two casual encounters, but always felt so badly after that I was dissuaded from continuing. Ironically, I now find myself with a woman who seems just the opposite. She claims to prefer sex with somebody she cares about, but that certainly did not prevent her from all manner of sexual liaisons. She had always held herself out as fairly old fashioned, but that was a ruse that she contrived because she knew that I was fairly old fashioned. I ultimately discovered that she many, many partners. She was prone to sex with coworkers, friends, casual acquaintances, boyfriends of friends, etc. Through pure (bad) luck, I happened to sit down at our shared computer and discover a brand new email to her from a guy on the west coast asking her if she was interested in a no-strings-attached sexual arrangement. She had not lived in California for years at that time, and insisted that she had only ever met him once at a dating event. I found it odd that a guy would reach out to a woman, suggesting an NSA arrangement, entirely out of the blue. But at that point, I really couldn't bear to know any more about her cavalier approach to sex, so I didn't press her on the matter.

I don't know if it was MY attitude towards sex that made him stand back a bit or not. But later when we talked about it he said that he was very anxious to have sex right away because for him it was more of a "tester" to see if we were compatible. Because I refused to hop straight into bed with him it forced him to discover who I was as a person first, and he said that was actually the first time he "waited" for a woman. He said the first time we did make love he felt he was already falling in love with me and he had never felt that before with any one else (and he was 48 years old at the time). Of course he kept alot of stuff from me about his past (see my other post) and when he did come clean and tell me everything, it was a shock, it hurt, but at the same time, oddly, it wasn't surprising because of his attitude regarding sex when I first met him. Now I did have a relationship with a man a few years before I met my husband and that guy was also another one who claimed he never really associated sex and emotions together before me (maybe I have some kind of magical fairy dust, who knows LOL), but we went our separate ways and I heard that he is now in an open relationship with his current girlfriend. Go figure.

Faking it, for me at least, always made me feel, I don't know the best word for it - stupid I guess. I dated a guy for a little while, thought he was a nice guy, treated me well, but I never really developed feelings past a friendship for him. But I was beginning to think that there were NO compatible guys out there for me (dating at my age was quite a shock after my divorce), so I just tried to "force" myself to feel something for this guy. But sex was absolutely boring to me with him - it wasn't that he was a bad lover, it was just that I didn't feel a connection with him and I guess I was just "holding back". Interestingly when I broke up with him one of the things he kept saying was that he thought we were so good together in bed. But to me there was just nothing there. With my husband, even though we've had a huge bump in the road, I feel so close to him and have absolutely no inhibitions with him. I can honestly say that he is the best lover I've ever had.

LONDON (AP) ? Apart from a wrong turn by a bus driver, a snarky tweet by a U.S. athlete, a few waterlogged venues and a scramble to find enough security guards, everything is fine at the London Olympics less than two weeks before opening ceremony, organizers insist.

Still, they had to scramble Tuesday to put the best face on an unfolding security debacle ? as well as other concerns ? afflicting the games, which start in 10 days.

"Let's put this in proportion," games chairman Sebastian Coe told reporters. "This has not, nor will it, impact on the safety and security of these games, that of course is our No. 1 priority."

Yet his efforts were undercut in Parliament, where the chief executive of the G4S security group acknowledged that his company's failure to recruit enough Olympic staff had embarrassed the entire nation. Some 3,500 more British troops ? including some just back from Afghanistan ? had to be called in on short notice to fill the gap.

The head of G4S, Nick Buckles, gave a groveling mea culpa as he was being quizzed by angry British lawmakers in testimony that was broadcast live.

"It's a humiliating shambles for the country, isn't it?" asked Labour lawmaker David Winnick.

"I cannot disagree with you," Buckles said.

Still, Buckles was hard-pressed to explain why his company had failed to inform officials until only two weeks before the start of the 2012 Olympic Games that its recruitment efforts had failed.

But the company will pay for its mistakes. G4S says it expects to lose between 35 million pounds and 50 million pounds ($54 million-$78 million) on the contract, which is equal to about 12 percent of its annual profit.

A day earlier, a few buses carrying Olympic athletes from Heathrow took a wrong turn as athletes started arriving for the games, a showcase moment if there ever was one. And the special "games lane" that they traveled on forced other London drivers into a miles-long traffic jam.

The lost buses ? one for Americans, another for Australians ? touched a nerve. From the very start, London transport organizers have feared repeating the transport woes of the 1996 Atlanta Games, where one of the biggest problems was having bus drivers brought in from outside the city who didn't know their way around.

That allegedly happened Monday in London, even though Heathrow sailed through its heaviest passenger day ever with short immigration lines and plenty of help for Olympic travelers.

"First day. First arrivals. It's going to happen," said Jayne Pearce, head of press operations.

Coe urged optimism, despite a Twitter storm that erupted when American hurdler Kerron Clement took to the social networking site to express his frustration with what he said was a four-hour bus ride from Heathrow to the athletes village.

Coe said Clement's bus journey actually took 2 1/2 hours and most athletes experienced no problems in reaching the village.

"Apart from a misturning and a couple of tweets we're in pretty good shape," Coe quipped. "The majority of athletes got in in good shape and on time. When they were met by our village mayor and chief executive they were busily tweeting saying how much they were enjoying village life. Ninety-eight percent of these journeys went without a hitch at all."

Coe also downplayed the complaints about traffic problems caused by the opening of a special Olympic lane on the M4 highway from Heathrow into the city.

"I understand there was an accident at Reading, which slowed some stuff down, but the vast majority of people got through and it seems to be working quite well," he said.

But Coe also said "we've got mops and buckets" to deal with the incessant rain that has soaked London for most of the summer. The ground at two key venues is waterlogged ? the rowing at Eton Dorney west of London and the equestrian at Greenwich Park, south of the Thames river.

"It is a problem," Coe said. "It is causing us extra challenges now."

Coe said organizers are resurfacing areas at the two venues, laying down temporary tracking for vehicles and spectators and putting up special tent shelters to keep the work force dry.

Although forecasters say the weather could clear in time for the July 27 start of the games, Coe noted that organizers have contingency plans in case it doesn't.

Extra competition days were built into the schedule "as a last resort" for rowing and equestrian. There is an alternate course available for sailing events at Weymouth, in southeast England, and Wimbledon has a retractable roof over Centre Court for tennis.

Olympic Park, however, still resembles a construction site, with workers laying cables, installing seats and landscaping grounds Tuesday.

Not to worry, Coe said.

"Our venues will be open on time," he promised. "There is still stuff to be done, but it's about dressing up. We'll be ready."

Meantime, Britain's Olympics minister, Hugh Robertson, said the deployment of soldiers at Olympic Park would give people "enormous reassurance."

Robertson, a former army major, said athletes are "incredibly reassured to see the armed forces on the gate."

Giving time can give you time

ScienceDaily (July 13, 2012) ? Many people these days feel a sense of "time famine" -- never having enough minutes and hours to do everything. We all know that our objective amount of time can't be increased (there are only 24 hours in a day), but a new study suggests that volunteering our limited time -- giving it away -- may actually increase our sense of unhurried leisure.

Across four different experiments, researchers found that people's subjective sense of having time, called 'time affluence,' can be increased: compared with wasting time, spending time on oneself, and even gaining a windfall of 'free' time, spending time on others increased participants' feelings of time affluence.

Lead researcher and psychological scientist Cassie Mogilner of the University of Pennsylvania believes this is because giving away time boosts one's sense of personal competence and efficiency, and this in turn stretches out time in our minds. Ultimately, giving time makes people more willing to commit to future engagements despite their busy schedules.

This new research, conducted by Mogilner and co-authors Zoe Chance of the Yale School of Management and Michael Norton of Harvard Business School, is forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
