Despite an unexpected downpour that saw round six and final matches cancelled, spirits could not be quelled at the annual Surf Coast Cup pre-season netball championships on Saturday.

Young netballers from Torquay, Modewarre and Anglesea played a competitive five rounds at Banyul Warri fields, serving as the perfect opportunity to warm up for the upcoming season that kicks off at Easter.

Coordinated by the Surf Coast Shire?s Sport and Recreation and Surf Coast Youth teams, in partnership with Headspace Barwon and sponsored by Ghanda, the Surf Coast Cup promotes women?s participation in sport and the links between exercise and positive mental health.

In a combined under 17s and under 19s, the top sides could not be separated with Anglesea and Torquay enjoying equal first. Just two teams contested the under 15s that saw Torquay take the win over Modewarre, and in their first appearance at the Surf Coast Cup, the under 13s saw Torquay 1sts take the title over Torquay 2nds and Modewarre.

Simone Lewis, Surf Coast Youth development team leader said it was a really even field and competition was strong.

?The girls were really competitive, there was a bit of intensity, but overall it was really fun, and positive, and a great opportunity to get the time in their legs in real match time.?

With emceeing by Jarrod Zdrzalka, music, a shooting competition and an impromptu dancing competition, one of the coordinators, Ash Giles, said it was fun, and everyone was pretty pumped.

Next year?s event should be bigger, with a women?s sports day and seminar to attract sports people from all sporting disciplines to play netball, attend netball training sessions, jump into a boot camp, try yoga, speak with nutritionists, enjoy music and a barbeque.
